How to read a peptide COA

The key distinction

A peptide COA is a report about a tested sample. Start by matching the sample and batch, then read identity, purity and quantity as separate results. A high percentage alone cannot answer all three questions.

Start with the sample, not the headline number

Open the original report beside the product or sample record. Copy the compound name, lot, report identifier, laboratory and dates into a short review note. Where identifiers differ, stop the comparison and ask which document belongs to the material you are reviewing.

A report may describe bulk material, a selected vial or a sample supplied to a laboratory. Those are different scopes. Ask what was sampled, who collected it and how the tested sample connects to the container in question. Record a missing link as unresolved; a professional-looking layout does not fill it in.

Separate identity, purity and quantity

Use three rows in your notes: what was detected, the reported analytical purity, and the measured amount. Copy the method and units beside each result. Do not enter a purity percentage in the amount row or treat the printed vial label as an independent measurement.

Find the chromatogram, spectrum or referenced data attachment behind each conclusion. Check that the sample ID, acquisition date and method belong to this report. An image without a readable axis or a cropped result table may be insufficient to check what the laboratory actually reported.

You do not need to reinterpret raw instrument data to notice an incomplete document. Separate an absent result from a failed result. If a test is not shown, write “not reported” and ask whether it was performed. Do not invent a pass or a fail.

Turn gaps into specific questions
